Sensory neurons, also known as afferent neurons, carry impulses from sensory receptors to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). These neurons transmit information such as touch, temperature, pain, and pressure. Motor (efferent) neurons carry impulses away from the CNS to muscles or glands. Association neurons, also called interneurons, connect sensory and motor neurons within the CNS. The NEX Science exam frequently tests neural pathways and directional flow of nerve impulses, making sensory neurons the correct answer for signals traveling from receptors to the CNS.
