Unlike ping , which merely confirms end-to-end reachability by eliciting an Echo Reply, traceroute provides a clinical breakdown of every Layer 3 device (router or switch) in the path.

The mechanics of this tool are quite clever: it sends out a sequence of packets (usually UDP or ICMP) with an increasing Time-to-Live (TTL) value, starting at 1. When the first router receives the packet, it decrements the TTL to 0, discards the packet, and sends an ICMP " Time Exceeded " message back to the source.
