Cisco provides EPLD updates to enhance hardware functionality or correct known hardware-related problems. These packages are distinct from traditional Cisco NX-OS software releases. An SMU package delivers a targeted software correction for a particular NX-OS defect and generally does not reprogram hardware logic. A Cisco NX-OS image upgrades the switch operating system and its software features. A kickstart image is associated with the boot process on older Nexus platforms and is not the package used to enhance programmable hardware functionality. Cisco’s Nexus upgrade documentation expressly identifies EPLD image upgrades as the mechanism for enhancing hardware functionality or resolving known hardware issues.
