Deduplication uses algorithms to analyze, perform pattern detection, and attempts to store only a single instance of data. In general deduplication can work at the block, bit-level, or file level. In PowerStore, deduplication works at the block level at 4 KB granularity.

The DPE on 480/F, 680/F, and 880/F systems is internally connected to Bus 99 which is a separate bus than the first SAS expansion port that is connected to Bus 0. Therefore, the DPE is recognized by the system as Bus 99 Enclosure 0 while the first DAE connected to the first SAS expansion port would be Bus 0 Enclosure 0. When a Windows client uses the SMB protocol to access a multiprotocol file system from a Dell Unity XT NAS server, the SID (Security Identifier) of the Windows user is mapped to a UID (User Identifier) on the UNIX file system. If no mapping is found in the local group database, the domain controller is checked to see if the SID is present there. The domain controller can provide the information needed to map the SID to the corresponding UID on the file system, allowing the Windows user to access the files. If the SID is not present in the domain controller, the Windows user's access would be removed.

The minimum drive count includes the number of drives specified in the stripe width, plus the hot spare capacity. The hot spare capacity is selected by the user at pool creation, and can either be set to 1 or 2 drives for every 32 drives in the pool.

A storage container is used to present vVol storage from a PowerStore cluster to vSphere. vSphere mounts the storage container as a vVol datastore and makes it available for VM storage. When a PowerStore cluster is used to provide VM storage, user VMs should be provisioned on the vVol datastores. The default storage container is mounted automatically on the nodes of the cluster.
