Different IPspaces are required when tenants must use separate network environments for data service and SnapMirror protection. An IPspace creates an independent network routing domain in ONTAP, allowing overlapping or isolated network configurations for different tenants. VLANs can segment traffic inside a network design, but they do not provide the same independent routing-domain separation that multi-tenancy requires in this scenario. A shared network infrastructure is not required when ONTAP is configured for tenant isolation. The idea that each node can communicate with only one tenant is incorrect because ONTAP nodes can host LIFs in multiple IPspaces, subject to proper design. The support engineer should choose IPspaces whenever the requirement is true tenant network separation, independent routing, or duplicate address support. That separation is especially important when tenants require independent routing tables, separate LIF placement, or overlapping address plans.
