When expanding an ONTAP cluster by adding new nodes or HA pairs,intercluster LIFsare required to enable secure communication between clusters or nodes during join and expansion workflows. Intercluster LIFs provide IP-based connectivity used for cluster peering, node addition, and replication setup.
Cluster management LIFs are used for administrative access, node management LIFs provide per-node management access, and data LIFs are used for client I/O. None of these LIF types support the inter-node communication required during cluster expansion.
