A Denial of Service (DoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the Internet. DoS attacks typically flood a network with excessive requests, overwhelming the network and preventing legitimate users from accessing IT resources or services. This type of attack does not compromise user accounts, hijack privileges, or duplicate user credentials, but it does effectively deny service to legitimate users.
