Giving employees responsibility for creating their own goals and action plans supports autonomy, ownership, and intrinsic motivation. Employees become active participants in determining what they want to accomplish and how they will achieve it rather than simply following externally imposed targets.
Goal creation can also increase commitment because employees connect their interests, capabilities, and aspirations with future actions. The manager can then provide guidance and ensure that individual goals align appropriately with organizational priorities.
Feedback is important for performance management but does not necessarily create ownership by itself. A sales reward is an extrinsic motivator because behavior is being encouraged through an external incentive. Rating employees on engagement may measure or label a condition but does little to create intrinsic motivation.
Intrinsic motivation is strengthened when work provides autonomy, competence, purpose, and meaningful involvement. Allowing employees to establish goals and create their own action plans directly contributes to these factors by giving them greater responsibility for their development and performance.
