MetroCluster uses SyncMirror technology to synchronously mirror data between storage pools at the two MetroCluster sites. Mirrored aggregates contain local and remote plexes, and writes are replicated synchronously so that a current copy of the data exists at the remote site. This storage-level mirroring is fundamental to MetroCluster ' s ability to maintain data availability during site failures and perform switchover operations. SnapMirror active sync is a separate ONTAP technology that provides synchronous application-level protection between peered clusters. SnapMirror Synchronous is likewise a replication technology but is not the underlying aggregate-mirroring mechanism used by MetroCluster. MPIO operates on the host to manage multiple SAN paths and performs no data replication. Therefore, data written to a LUN residing on a mirrored MetroCluster aggregate is replicated to the remote plex through SyncMirror.
