Data Center Bridging Exchange (DCBX) communicates DCB capability and configuration information between neighboring network devices. It is carried through extensions to Link Layer Discovery Protocol and is associated with IEEE 802.1Qaz. DCBX communicates parameters for Priority-based Flow Control, Enhanced Transmission Selection, and application priority mappings, allowing a switch and attached host or storage adapter to determine whether their policies are compatible. Depending on device configuration, one peer may advertise settings and another may accept them; mismatches can also be detected for corrective action. Explicit Congestion Notification signals congestion to end systems, while APP describes application priority association and ETS allocates available link bandwidth among traffic classes. These features are coordinated by the control exchange but are not themselves the exchange mechanism. In a converged RoCE storage design, administrators should verify DCBX negotiation, PFC classes, and congestion behavior consistently across the full path rather than assuming a single configured link guarantees end-to-end operation.
